The Huskers came into the day looking to get another weekend sweep and possibly get out of Madison early with their first run-rule win of the weekend.
Their bats were not only alive, but they were making huge plays at all the right times too. They took advantage of bases’ loaded moments to extend the score and make sure they got that run-rule win.
The Husker bats went right to work with Ava Kuszak launching a 2 RBI home run, against her former team, and scoring Hannah Camenzind to put the Huskers up
to a quick 2-0 lead.
The Badgers came up to bat for the first time expecting to see Kylee Magee on the mound, but a last minute decision by Rhonda Revelle put Alexis Jensen out there instead for the 2nd straight day. We then saw a longish delay for the lines to be repainted on the mound and in the hitting box since it is pretty wet.
With Hannah Camenzind at 2nd, and 2 outs on the board, Alexis Jensen hit an RBI double in the top of the 3rd inning to put the Huskers up 3-0. Even though they had those 2 outs already, Kacie Hoffmann managed to hit an RBI single, to score Jensen, and extended the lead to 4.
The Huskers kept the scoring going into the 4th as Hannah Camenzind managed to steal 2nd base while Jordy Frahm scored and made the score 5-0 Huskers.
When the Badgers got the chance at the plate in the bottom of the inning, they finally scored their 1st run of the weekend when Hilary Blomberg was walked. Sydney Spear was brought in to pinch run. Spear advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a fly out by Kendra Lewis.
The Huskers basically called game in the top of the 5th blowing the game wide open with no room for the Badgers to recover to try and extend the game. We saw a couple pinch runners for the Skers when Jensen hit a double, Kennedi Williams came in to run. Hoffmann was then walked and Katelyn Caneda came in to run for her. Badger pitcher Shelby Jacobson walked 2 girls in a row as Sammie Bland was next to reach base. Bases were now loaded.
Lauren Camenzind came up to bat next and reach on a fielders choice while Bland advanced to 2nd and Caneda to 3rd. The Huskers got a run here as well as Williams scored, unearned, because of an error by Badger Hannah Conger. Bases were loaded for Nebraska once again.
Jordy Frahm came up to bat and does what Jordy Frahm does best and just annihilated that ball over the fence to hit a grand slam home run and blow open the game. The score was now 10-1 and put the Huskers into position to run-rule after the bottom of the 5th.
They weren’t done yet though. Ava Kuszak still had more left in her as she blasted a 2 RBI home run into left center field. Hannah Camenzind scored, unearned, as well. The Huskers now led 12-1.
Wisconsin now had their chance to get back into the game any way they could, but just didn’t have enough in the tank. Jordy Frahm also came in to close the game out on the mound after Alexis Jensen pitched 4 innings and had 3 strikeouts.
With the rain coming down and the game coming to a close, Kaylie Whidden gave the Badgers one last run in the game as she hit a home run to bring them within 10 runs. That would be all she wrote though as the Huskers closed out the game, and weekend, with a win and a series sweep.
Alexis Jensen got the win today to put her at 17-2 on the season while Badgers’ pitcher Shelby Jacobson took the loss and put her at 10-6 this season.
While Alexis Jensen had a good game, I believe Jordy Frahm deserves player of the game because of her absolute bomb of a homer that called game for the Huskers in the 5th inning.
The Huskers will be back at it next weekend as they’ll come home first, but then will travel to Minnesota. Fridays game will be at 6:00pm CST, Saturday’s at 1:00pm CST, and Sunday’s at 12:00pm CST.
