David Lesky reviews a promising start from Daniel Lynch IV on Thursday.
Since Lynch has been back in the rotation, this is the first game where he’s led with the changeup. He threw it 24 times in his 24 pitches, with his sinker next and his four-seamer after that. He’s always had that really good changeup, and his slider is often a nice swing-and-miss pitch. I wonder if he could actually find success as a starter if he continued to throw his changeup this much, but maybe added a cutter and stepped
back a bit from the four-seamer. I think his sinker legitimately gets grounders, so it’s an important pitch, but if he can spin the slider, maybe he can add that third fastball, as Brian Sweeney talks about, and stick.
Not to be the Debbie Downer on a five shutout inning night, but I still don’t buy it.
