Manchester United is set to appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager ahead of the Manchester Derby on Saturday, and his backroom staff have been confirmed per David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The former United midfielder will be joined by former England Assistant Steve Holland, former player and Middlesbrough assistant Jonathan Woodgate, former United defender Jonny Evans and U-21s coach Travis Binnion.
Per Ornstein’s report, Darren Fletcher will return to his U-18 coaching duties.
The primary decision
makers involved over the past week have been Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Chief Executive Omar Berrada, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the primary owners, the Glazer family, signing off on their decision to appoint Carrick. The club leadership plan to spend the next few months identifying a permanent successor while Carrick navigates the final 17 matches of the season.
United are currently in 7th place on 32 points, and are three points back from fourth-place Liverpool. After crashing out of the FA Cup on Sunday, European qualification is the sole aim for the rest of the season.
The top three of Arsenal (49 pts), Manchester City and Aston Villa (43 pts) isn’t too far away by points on the board, but the crowded field from fourth thru 15th will make any climb that much harder.
