Leon Goretzka is in something of an awkward situation right now, given that his departure from Bayern Munich in the summer has been confirmed but he will still stay at the club for multiple more months.
How much trust will Bayern and head coach Vincent Kompany give him, knowing he does not have a long term future at the club?
Given he completely sat out Bayern’s last two games against PSV Eindhoven and Hamburger SV before not playing a minute in the recent 5-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim, either, there were always going to be queries about the Germany international’s situation. Asked why Goretzka is not playing at all recently after the Hoffenheim match, Kompany had this to say.
“We have fewer games at the moment. Competition for spots is and will always be our strength. We have confidence in Leon and the other players,” Kompany stressed, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We have to go through this month and achieve our goals, and then in March and April we’ll need every player. Leon’s situation is a consequence of having a fully fit squad. We 100% trust Leon that he’ll be there when his moment comes.”
Still, the press and Goretzka himself will keep a close eye on the situation in the weeks to come.
