The Raptors certainly have a type. On Monday, Toronto waived guard Andre Jackson Jr. and signed 6’8” forward Tyson Degenhart.
Degenhart has played in the G League for the Raptors 905 since 2025, and was efficient last year in a reserve role, shooting 54/38/71 for the season in an average of 21 minutes per game. The forward had a four-year college career at Boise State where he finished with the record of total points for the institution,
averaging 18 points in his final season, and leading the conference in effective field goal percentage.
After putting up 19 points last December in a game against the Maine Celtics, Degenhart was asked by broadcaster Chris McKee what he had learned from his time in the G-League. His response was that “defence will take you a long way, that’s for sure.” Speaking to his history as a volume scorer in his collegiate days, the former Bronco dismissed the need for him to contribute in that manner, arguing that he wanted to win, and was capable of impacting games in other ways.
This humility and willingness to take on the dirty work could take him far in the Raptors’ system, while his physical stature puts him alongside Scottie Barnes, Collin-Murray Boyles, and Allen Graves in the Raptors’ growing list of do-it-all forwards. It never hurts to have a back-up for your back-up’s back-up. Toronto certainly doesn’t think so, at least.
