Raheem Mostert’s departure from the Miami Dolphins following the 2024 NFL season was a less-than-ceremonious affair. Rumored friction between the running back and former head coach Mike McDaniel was confirmed during Mostert’s interview with Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports on Monday.
When asked by Cowherd about the relationship between Mostert and McDaniel, the running back had this to say:
“We had a good relationship going into the Dolphins organization, but obviously things kind of flustered and went
their own ways, but you know, at the beginning of everything there’s always a good story… We did everything that we possibly could to maximize opportunities that were given to us.. He’s a great coach.. If guys are talking, he’ll listen and give them some advice, but head coach wise — the past couple of years, what [Miami has] been going through, it’s just been kind of rough.”
Mostert would continue:
“I just kind of feel bad for the players… When you have a coach that is so player friendly, it doesn’t really mix all that well. Look at the coaching history… of all of these different sports franchises, they have coaches that implement toughness, resilience and that’s something that he kind of missed the mark on in being a head coach.”
Cowherd would then go on to question Miami’s lack of toughness under McDaniel before asking Mostert to comment.
“When you talk about guys like Mike Tomlin, [Mike] Vrabel, even look at [Bill] Belichick, it was no-nonsense BS. We get in here, we’re getting the job done, and it’s my way or the highway. It’s pure, this is how we’re going to coach it. I’m essentially the ruler… When you’re dealing with a coach that’s so nonchalant, laid back, wants to be the catalyst behind being a player’s coach, it kind of shifts that organization… It can work for other smaller league teams, possibly… As a player, I need somebody tough that’s going to lay the hammer down when it needs to be down and tell other players to get in line.
When you don’t got that, that impact can definitely be detrimental.”
