Bayern Munich’s front office has taken some heat over the past decade for overpaying players in negotiations and being too player-friendly. Back in February 2026, Bayern extended Dayot Upamecano through 2030. Some players react to a big contract with middling performances, but Upamecano doubled down and cemented himself as one of the best defenders in the world.
For the first 60 minutes of Bayern’s 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid, Upamecano completely locked up the attacking duo of Alexander Sørloth
and Julián Alvarez. Their replacements did not fare much better.
In the postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl heaped praise on Upamecano.
“Thank God we extended [Dayot’s] contract,” said Eberl. “Thank God he’s at our club. He’s been performing at a world-class level for weeks now. He already did so last season and at the World Cup, and now he’s doing it again. Absolutely unbelievable. He scores goals, and he’s scored goals in the past as well. There’s nothing more to say other than that he’s world-class.”
Vincent Kompany and Aaron Danks have done a solid job with the three-player rotation at center-back to keep Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, and Kim Min-jae playing at a high level.
