Devin Haney is once again a world champion and this time in the welterweight division following a decision win over Brian Norman Jr over the weekend. With Haney’s win the attention immediately turned to
where he will look for his next opponent in a rather weak division at the moment, and with Conor Benn being a obvious name after he’s made it clear his intention to drop back down to 147 to win a belt, Bill Haney would suggest that Benn hasn’t done much to earn that opportunity.
“Conor ‘When’. When is he going to get a belt? When is he going to do what Devin has done?” Bill Haney declared after their latest victory. “When is he going to do something in boxing that’s on Devin Haney’s level? I mean just one thing, before you start talking to us. We did the stadium in Australia [against George Kambosos], we did that for undisputed. We did Lomachenko. There’s a lot of tremendously talented fighters that deserve a shot.”
Boxing, of course, is often not about who deserves an opportunity as much as it is about who can bring the most money to the table. Benn, despite not having the accolades of a champion, is still a marquee name who is a draw and would certainly sell tickets for a fight against Haney.
Haney, for his part, has essentially said that he’s willing to face all-comers at 147 but in a division that has thinned out mightily over the last few years he might be hard pressed to find a better financial windfall at the moment.
