While all of North America is being taken over by FIFA-mania with the World Cup in full swing, FIBA, The Fédération Internationale de Basketball, is gearing up for their own World Cup in 2027. Today in Hamilton, facing off against the Puerto Rican team, Canada is primed to contend more effectively than ever before, with members of their roster hitting new peaks of their powers.
The Canadian national team is now undefeated in the qualifying games thus far, posting a 4-0 record, including a 96-85 win
over Puerto Rico in February, on their home soil. The Puerto Rican team is now coming north to face off against renewed Canada with a whole new lineup of NBA players.
While some high profile Canadian players – RJ Barrett and Jamal Murray, namely – will not be representing Canada on the hardwood, reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is leading the charge alongside his cousin, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Dillon Brooks of the Phoenix Suns. The Alexanders previously played on the 2023 roster, where Canada took home bronze after defeating the United States in an overtime victory.
The Puerto Rican side has two NBA players, Enrique Gabriel Freeman, Now 5th in the world, the Canadian team has already gotten a berth to the second round, and is playing to maintain a perfect record tonight. Puerto Rico needs to win tonight to have a chance of staying in the tourney.
From a statistics perspective, the Canadian team has been outscoring PuertoRico by a margin of 15 points, and facilitating more effectively, while both being equally matched from a rebounding perspective.
