Before departing for a Week 7 road game against the Seattle Seahawks on “Sunday Night Football,” the Kansas City Chiefs made four roster moves on Saturday.
The team is adding a defensive reinforcement in second-year
linebacker Cooper McDonald, who has been on the team’s Reserve/Injured (IR) list since leaving Week 1’s contest against the Denver Broncos with a knee injury.
The Chiefs designated McDonald to return to practice this week, and he drew a questionable tag on this week’s final injury report. Now that he has been put back on the active roster, the Chiefs removed his game designation for Sunday night.
On Friday, head coach Andy Reid confirmed that third string running back Brashard Smith would be listed as out for Sunday due to a hamstring injury and that practice squad rookie Jadyn Ott would make his NFL debut in his place. That will apparently be the status for the next month. Rather than a practice squad elevation, Ott has been signed to the 53-man roster with Smith heading to IR. Smith will be out for at least Kansas City’s next four games.
Veteran wide receiver Justin Watson did receive a practice squad call up for this week’s contest. Watson returned to the Chiefs earlier this month, where he played from 2022-24. He signed to the practice squad in the wake of injuries to wideouts Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice. Thorton is likely out for the season after dislocating his ankle in Week 4. Rice will miss his second consecutive contest on Sunday with a hamstring injury.
Watson — who was released by the Houston Texans before the season — was elevated in Week 6 to suit up against the Los Angeles Chargers. He played only one offensive snap in his season debut and did not see a target. He also played three special teams snaps.
Another situation to watch on Sunday will be the status of veteran cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was declared questionable on Friday with the knee ailment that has plagued him much of his career. The Chiefs announced on Saturday that Sneed is not traveling with the team, but he will meet them in Seattle.
Sneed remains questionable for the matchup.
The Chiefs will enter the week with an open spot on their practice squad. Expect a minor roster move before the team returns to practice on Wednesday.
