Vincent Kompany is not exactly shy when it comes to discussing Jonas Urbig’s potential.
With the young Bayern Munich goalkeeper receiving a call-up to Germany’s senior national team, Kompany offered a remarkably confident assessment of where he believes Urbig’s career is heading. The Bayern Munich boss made it clear that he sees the goalkeeper as much more than a promising backup for the future.
“You also have to plan for the future. If anyone thinks Jonas won’t become number one in Germany, they’re
making a big mistake. He’ll certainly be Germany’s number one at some point. It’s a sensible, very sound decision. Jonas has the right mentality. As a country, you have to develop your talent,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That is quite the endorsement from Kompany, particularly considering the competition Urbig faces for the Germany No. 1 spot.
Marc-André ter Stegen currently has the job under Jürgen Klopp, while Germany also has several other young goalkeepers pushing for opportunities. Urbig, however, has already earned the trust of Kompany at Bayern Munich and continues to develop alongside experienced goalkeeping figures such as Manuel Neuer.
For Kompany, the Germany call-up is about more than simply rewarding Urbig for his recent progress. It is part of developing the next generation of German talent. Whether Urbig eventually becomes Germany’s No. 1 remains to be seen, but Kompany clearly believes the Bayern Munich goalkeeper has the mentality and ability to reach that level.
