Liverpool seem likely to let Stefan Bajčetić join Celta Vigo, his former club, this transfer window per the Liverpool ECHO. Bajčetić at one time looked to be a talent the Reds were developing at the center of the pitch, but a long-term hamstring injury that required reparative surgery proved challenging for the player. Though he has returned to full training, he has done so further down the pecking order than he would hope to be at this stage.
With the recent departure of Curtis Jones, however, this
news feels like a further paring down of midfield depth with limited names connected as incoming rumors. Despite the lack of depth, however, it’s not unreasonable for Bajčetić to seek a place elsewhere if he wants to maintain regular minutes at the top level.
Bajčetić signed for Liverpool’s Academy from Celta Vigo in 2020, and made his debut for the Reds in 2022 when he was subbed on in the 9-0 win against Bournemouth. When he was again a late substitution a month later in the Champions League against Ajax, Bajčetić became Liverpool’s youngest ever player in the competition.
In 2023 his career at Liverpool looked to be progressing well as he began to be afforded more minutes and often impressed even if the club as a whole was not in its best form. Though injuries have stymied the 21-year-old’s progress this early in his career, he has all the tools to be a major talent.
Should Bajčetić depart, Liverpool’s midfield depth will include the main starters of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Florian Wirtz alongside depth provided by Wataru Endō, James McConnell, Trey Nyoni, and the returning Harvey Elliott. All of these players were in the squad for the opening match of the season other than Harvey Elliott, whose future is unclear — but the ECHO reported today that the club have not “fielded any formal interest” from other clubs looking for his services following his frustrating loan spell at Aston Villa last season.
