Bayern Munich’s big summer signing of Eintracht Frankfurt and Germany men’s national team left-back has made waves — and raised questions about the security of incumbent left-back Alphonso Davies’ place in the team.
The Canadian superstar was once hailed as the face of the rising Bayern generation, along with Jamal Musiala. But ever since signing a big contract extension last spring, Davies has battled against injury setback after injury setback. The Bavarians have adapted in his absence — and now,
with the arrival of a star in the making in Brown, might just have a long-term alternative.
Davies is not letting go of his position without a fight, though. It’s clear that availability has been his biggest issue— and it is one he is focusing on addressing.
From Transfermarkt, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Alphonso Davies has no desire to leave Bayern despite the signing of Nathaniel Brown. Quite the contrary, the Canadian wants to fight for his spot under Vincent Kompany, and that means being in top condition when the 2026/27 season kicks off. To that end, Davies has worked together with a personal trainer, Matthias Blankenburg, to stabilize his fitness.
Davies: “Matthias has been great; he’s been helping me to get back to full fitness. I think he has been doing a good job, and I continue to work with him, and he just keeps me healthy and fit”
The Davies and Brown dynamic will be one to watch this coming season for Bayern. If both stay healthy, it will be a huge boon for Vincent Kompany — who had to make do with a litany of injuries at full-back last season.
And as World Cup watchers have surely taken note, Davies is a spark for Canada at left wing — his original position at Bayern, too, before needs must spurred his breakout move to the back line. Bayern has a long-term need there and appears to have opted not to add depth behind Luis Díaz this summer; Morocco’s outstanding Ismael Saibari appears slated for central attacking areas instead. Could that be the next step in Davies’ evolution? To stay at Bayern, he may need to adapt once again.
