Joao Cancelo has rejected suggestions Barcelona could play for a draw in El Clasico and says Hansi Flick’s side will be gunning for victory against Real Madrid.
The Catalans only need a point to seal another league title, but Cancelo says Barcelona are only thinking about winning.
“At Barcelona, there’s no culture of playing for a draw; we’re a team that always seeks victory, and that’s what we’re going to do on Sunday,” he told ESPN.
“I think it will be a beautiful game to watch, and we’ll try to win
so that, of course, we can celebrate at the end. Of course, this game always has a special flavor, because it’s our eternal rival, it’s the game every player wants to play.”
The chance to win La Liga against their bitter rivals is extra motivation for Barca, and Cancelo is looking forward to picking up his first league title with the Catalans.
“I think so (that it has a special taste), I think it shows this year who was the most consistent team in the championship. Only God will know. We will go into the game with the mentality of getting the victory. Whether it’s against Real Madrid or not, what I want is that in the end we win this title and be able to add another title to my career, that’s what I want,” he added.
“The Clásico is a very important game, both for us and for Real Madrid. I think it’s a beautiful rivalry that the spectator enjoys watching. And we’re going there looking for the three points, which is what we need to achieve the much-desired La Liga title.”
Cancelo is set to make history if and when Barca win La Liga. The defender will become the first player to win four of Europe’s top five leagues as he’s already won titles in Italy, England, and Germany.
