Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA) 6, Norfolk Tides 5
The Tides went up 1-0 on a Heston Kjerstad home run, then traded off four-run innings with the Jumbo Shrimp. Trace Bright, Norfolk starter, allowed four runs on two homers in the fourth. Alex Pham allowed one more, on an error by shortstop José Barrero.
Down 5-1, the Tides rallied for four runs in the ninth. Kjerstad hit a sac fly, Jonathan Rodríguez hit a two-run double, and Creed Willems hit a game-tying single. But Norfolk blew it in the end, as Cameron Foster let in a game-winning single.
Box Score
Double-A: Somerset Patriots (NYY) 5, Chesapeake Baysox 2
Better late than never: the Baysox took until the seventh to get on the board, but they did, courtesy off a two-run Griff O’Ferrall home run that scored Fredrick Bencosme. Thomas Sosa, Anderson de los Santos, Bencosme, O’Ferrall, and Tavian Josenberger each finished with a hit apiece.
Chesapeake’s Luis de León let in two runs in four innings, but he did strike out four. Two more runs scored off a home run let in by Jeisson Cabrera. Zane Barnhart surrendered one more, unearned, after an error by second baseman Frederick Bencosme. Michael Caldon and Jake Lloyd pitching a scoreless inning or more apiece.
High-A: Frederick Keys 3, Greenville Drive 2 – Game 1 – F/7
Like the big league team, the O’s High- and Low-A affiliates played makeup doubleheaders. The Keys won the first game with some late lumber.
Said lumber: in the fifth, Braylin Tavera and Leandro Arias homered. The Keys’ third run came courtesy of Wehiwa Aloy’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Ike Irish and Colin Tuft also had hits.
Starter Yeiber Cartaya pitched well, with one run allowed in four innings. Bradley Brehmer threw two scoreless, earning the win, and Raimon Gomez got the save, despite allowing one run in one inning.
High-A: Frederick Keys 6, Greenville Drive 5 – Game 2 – F/8
The Keys swept the doubleheader with a seesaw contest in Game 2.
Braylin Tavera homered in the fifth to give Frederick the lead, but Greenville retook it in the sixth with two runs on an Elis Cuevas error. Wehiwa Aloy tied it with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth. The Drive scored again in the seventh to go back ahead, but Cuevas made up for his defense, delivering a walk-off single in the bottom half to complete the sweep.
Low-A: Wilson Warbirds 7, Delmarva Shorebirds 6 – Game 1 – F/7
Delmarva dropped Game 1 of a make-up doubleheader, courtesy of a three-run meltdown in the ninth. Prior to that, they’d scored two runs in the first on, believe it or not, a double steal and a Wilson throwing error. They’d add two more when Stiven Martínez walked with the bases loaded, and Jesús Liranzo hit an RBI ground-rule double.
But then, Wilson scored a run in each of the fourth-eighth innings. Starter Caden Hunter was good, with four one-run innings. Steven Still was a sieve, allowing three runs in two innings of relief. J.D. Hennen allowed three more in just 0.2 innings of work. Kenny Leiner got stuck with the blown save.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 4, Wilson Warbirds 3 – Game 2
Better results here, as the Shorebirds took their turn mounting a late-innings rally. Félix Amparo (one of two Amparos in the lineup, next to Edwin) hit an RBI single and Elvin García followed.
In the seventh, García added a two-run double, putting Delmarva up 4-2. A late run came in during the bottom of the ninth, against Kailen Hamson, but it didn’t affect the result.
Prior to that, Esteban Mejía pitched 4.2 good innings, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
