Manuel Neuer’s expiring Bayern Munich contract is continuing to make for speculation over the goalkeeper’s future, but sporting chief Max Eberl is eager to tamp down the talk.
“Manu will be 40 in March. The way Manu is currently performing is world-class. We’ll sit down, talk and exchange ideas with him,” Eberl relayed in comments captured by Sport Bild, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “At some point, the body isn’t ready for professional football anymore, but that’s still not the case with Manu at the moment.
“We’re relaxed. Towards the end of the season, April, May, we’ll speak and see how things will continue. At the moment he’s doing incredibly well.”
This builds on previous remarks Eberl gave on the situation, which were pretty much identical to what he said here. “The goalkeeping situation right now is optimal,” the Bayern sporting chief had stressed.
BFW Commentary
There’s really nothing new nor has there been for a while. Neuer is at that stage in the career where every bad outcome will get put under the microscope. Should he have saved it? On more than a few occasions lately, the answer has indeed been yes. Does he still have it? Also yes. It’s clear that Neuer is thinking more critically about his own future now as well, and that is only natural. He may not be at his own incredible peaks, but we can trust that if he decides to continue playing, he will still be capable of standing up to the task.
And you know what? Jonas Urbig could use another season of seasoning before assuming the mantle. Here is to hoping Neuer sticks around one more year. His experience may yet need to shine this year, too, if Bayern is indeed to win it all.
