Michael Reschke believes Bayern Munich have done a good job of reshaping their squad this summer, even if that meant saying goodbye to some important players.
The former Bayern Munich technical director specifically points to Leon Goretzka and Raphaël Guerreiro as significant departures, while arguing that the additions of Nathaniel Brown and Ismaël Saibari have more than compensated from a sporting perspective.
“Of course, they lost important squad players in Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro. But
with Brown and Saibari, they have made a significant leap in quality. All other departures are only relevant from a financial perspective; they have no impact on the team’s performance,” Reschke told Abendzeitung.
There is also an important financial component to the restructuring.
Goretzka and Guerreiro both left when their contracts expired, while Bayern Munich also moved on several other players through transfers and loans. The club confirmed the departures of Goretzka, Guerreiro and Nicolas Jackson this summer.
That allowed Bayern Munich to remove a considerable amount of salary from the wage bill while simultaneously bringing in younger players with significant upside.
Reschke’s assessment is essentially that Bayern Munich did not simply replace players — they made the squad younger, maintained its quality and improved the club’s financial flexibility.
And with Brown and Saibari already making strong early impressions, it is easy to understand why he is so positive about the rebuild.
