Even though they are coming off a Super Bowl berth and fielding one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in football, the main story surrounding the New England Patriots in recent week has been the situation involving their head coach, Mike Vrabel, and NFL reporter Dianna Russini. Vrabel and Russini, both married to other people, were spotted at an adult’s only resort in Arizona in early March.
Since then, more photos and rumors surrounding the two have come out. The barrage of leaks has been constant,
and prompting Vrabel to take a leave of absence from the team on the final day of the NFL Draft.
And yet, that aforementioned quarterback does not see the Vrabel situation impacting the Patriots in a negative fashion.
“No, I don’t,” Maye told the Associated Press recently. “I mean, he’s our head coach. I think he’s done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I’m just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready.”
Instead, Maye believes that the entire situation “[wi]ll take care of itself.”
Vrabel, like Russini, initially claimed the photos were taken out of context. However, as more pictures were published, the pressure on both started to mount. Russini resigned her position with The Athletic within a few days of the initial leaks, with Vrabel later admitted he had had to have “some difficult conversations with people that I care about.”
Throughout the ordeal, Maye remains confident that his coach will continue leading the Patriots and be able to rally the troops around him.
“I know he’s got the right mindset and I know he’s a great human being,” the third-year quarterback said. “I think he’s … like I said, I love playing for him.”
The Patriots are currently in Phase 2 of their voluntary offseason workout program, and Vrabel has been part of the sessions.
