Softball and baseball played the second game of their respective series against Penn State and Indiana. Both teams had their games well in hand and notched series wins on a beautiful, sunny day in Eugene.
Baseball Game 2 vs. Indiana
Baseball picked up another series win yesterday with a 5-1 victory in Game 2 against the Indiana Hoosiers.
Collin Clarke pitched a full seven innings and gave up just one home run, Indiana’s only score of the game.
Oregon however, struck first with a Drew Smith solo shot in the bottom of the second inning.
After the Hoosiers tied the game by trading home runs, Ryan Cooney hit the go-ahead shot in the bottom of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Smith got on base with a walk and was immediately sent home with an Angel Laya shot to right field.
Cooney added another RBI single and the Ducks were up 5-1.
Pitching settled in on both sides and neither side generated any more runs. Oregon’s best shot at padding their lead came in the bottom of the 7th inning, but Indiana’s pitcher got himself out of a bases-loaded jam.
Clarke had a fine day on the mound, giving up just two hits and one run.
Luke Morgan, Blake Crawford, and Michael Meckna pitched the last two innings, and combined to give up no hits while only walking one batter.
Here was the Game 2 final line:
Coach Waz had this to say after winning the game:
The Ducks play Game 3 early this afternoon and are looking for a sweep against Indiana. Cal Scolari will take the mound at 12:35 pm PT, and you can see the game on the Big Ten Network.
Softball Game 2 vs. Penn State
Maddie Milhorn pitched all five innings in yesterday’s Game 2, which ended in a 10-1 run-rule win against Penn State.
Oregon got on the board first, with a three-run first inning that was a combination of small ball and PSU gifting the Ducks opportunities with pitching miscues.
Down 3-0, the Nittany Lions responded with their only score of the game, a home run in the second inning.
The Ducks added three more in the second inning. Elon Butler knocked a double down the left field line. The call on the field was that the ball was in play, and was upheld upon a PSU challenge.
Two batters later, Butler came home as PSU insisted on gifting Oregon additional runs.
In a four-run third inning, Addison Amaral hit a double to make the score 7-1. With her and Kaylynn Jones on base, you-know-who came to the plate to kill a three-run homer and give the Ducks a nine-run lead.
Facing Oregon’s pitching and some great defense, PSU could not generate any more runs, and fell in the fifth inning.
Elon Butler was the batting star again, and her five RBIs on the day gives her 30(!) RBIs in the last 14 games. Maddie Milhorn picked up her first win of the season – and her Oregon career – with a complete-game performance.
Ducks softball also plays today for a sweep of Penn State. First pitch is at 12:00 pm and is shown on B1G+.
