Bayern Munich might as well begin running a hospital at this point.
The Bavarians’ injury and illness woes continue, as Dayot Upamecano was not a part of the squad against Union Saint-Gilloise. The central defender contracted an illness that kept him out of the fray completely. This also meant the pair of Kim Min-Jae and Jonathan Tah manning the backline together — a rare sight.
However, it does not end here.
When speaking to Kerry Hau from Sky Sports, director of sport Max Eberl revealed that Upamecano
may be away for longer. His short-term illness will see him out for the weekend Bundesliga fixture against FC Augsburg as well.
This places him alongside Josip Stanišić with a torn capsular ligament, Konrad Laimer with a torn muscle, and Sacha Boey with a month-long absence due to gastrointestinal illness.
With the current shortage of options, how likely is it that manager Vincent Kompany starts Hiroki Ito at left centre-back? The Japanese man has proven himself, and though did not make the starting XI tonight, is a quality player who deserves to start more often. Which centre-back pairing would you like to see next game? Let us know in the comments.
