In a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, WWE star Cody Rhodes was asked again about his timeline and plan for retiring from WWE.
First, here is what the 41-year-old Rhodes said after being reminded that he once said he would retire at 40 years old.
“Yeah I did [say that], didn’t I? Told you an old Cody lie, huh?”
The American Nightmare talked about the final WWE contract that he recently signed, and guessed that he has six or seven years left in the ring. He certainly won’t be falling on the ground
for a living by the time he reaches 50 years old.
“I just signed my last contract. I say last contract – that’s gonna go for a while…my time with WWE could go, just to give you a real answer here and not politic around you, probably seven? Seven years? Six, seven?
…I definitely don’t want to wrestle into my fifties. No shame to anyone who wrestles into their fifties. I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
Rhodes is grateful that he was able to play Guile in the Street Fighter movie, which is a video game series that he loved to play growing up. Cody talked about how you have to “stop taking” at some point, but it doesn’t like he plans to do that anytime soon.
“I have shed so much of my skin for the industry. But I have also been given so, so, so much. I think there’s a point where you have to stop taking. I’m not there, but there’s a point. And I think that’s in that time frame. A point where you just have to stop taking.
…I don’t know how many moments like this I can take, and I can get. Hopefully more. Hopefully a lot more. But I’ve been so lucky so far, and so blessed so far.”
Rhodes briefly admitted that ‘Cody fatigue’ is a real thing in WWE, before quickly backtracking, and then landing somewhere in the middle.
“I mean, Cody fatigue is already pretty set in…Well, no. Maybe. Maybe. But I think you can only go so far. And you’re only supposed to go so far.”
How much further can Cody Rhodes take things now that he’s already been the face of WWE for at least a couple of years? Has Cody fatigue already set in for you as a fan, and can you handle six or seven more years of it? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
