I don’t care what Adam Silver says, it’s weird to be writing about an ongoing win streak after your team loses the NBA Cup Final.
The Spurs lost. I saw them lose. They went on a great tournament run, and
now it’s over, and I’m supposed to simultaneously pretend that it was important, and also that it didn’t technically happen?
What a load of bollocks!
Okay, I might just still be a little upset about *the Knicks* being the ones to beat the Spurs after they took down the Rockets, Lakers, Nuggets, and nearly undefeated Thunder, but I just cannot imagine anything more crushing as a fan than losing an important game, and then having to pretend it didn’t happen.
You need to fix this, Silver, you hear me?! It’s confusing! It’s silly! And your argument about tiebreaker advantages is largely hooey, because the teams that win the NBA Cup *should* get an advantage!
Anyway, the Spurs are technically still riding a three-game win streak, and though I doubt that they’ll be able to pretend that their NBA Cup loss didn’t happen, they have a unique opportunity to start anew without technically suffering a loss.
And honestly, what could be a better post-whooping palate cleanser than a match-up against the Washington Wizards? At the risk of understating this, the Wizards are BAD. As in, worst record in the NBA, awful.
I’m not even sure what I can say about the Wizards that won’t sound disingenuous.
They’re 26th in scoring and 27th in offensive rating, and those are the positives. Their defensive rating is three points worse than 2nd-to-last place, and their net rating is just shy of -14.
The latter number, if it holds, would be the 3rd worst net rating in NBA history. The former number would be the 11th worst defensive rating. As a point of comparison, even the recently-tanking Spurs teams never managed to crack the all-time bottom 25 in net rating, and I don’t think I have to remind you all how hard that was to watch.
Additionally, the Wizards are pretty banged up. Their leading scorer and best defensive player is injured, in addition to three more important rotational players (and arguably their second-best defender/young player in Bilal Coulibaly), and they’re running out of NBA-quality guards.
They commit a ton of turnovers (29th) and are also dead last in opponents’ scoring off of their turnovers, about as ugly a recipe for success in the NBA as a team can manage.
In short, it’s not looking good for the Wizards. Like, it’s just about a tie between this team and the 1978 film The Wiz for worst wizard-themed performance of the last 50 years.
I can’t imagine this even functioning as a trap game for the Spurs. Not if they took their recent non-loss seriously. Not even if Victor Wembanyama ends up taking the night off to fly to his grandmother’s funeral (Our sincere condolences, buddy).
In short, if the Spurs *do* lose this game, I’m going to go on a rampage not seen since the Mongols rode the Steppes. I mean, I’m gonna make the Nixon Tapes look like an elegant philosophical treatise, comparatively speaking.
The Spurs have a chance to just keep on winning as if nothing happened. The expectation is that they will.
It’s certainly more than I expect of the NBA commissioner. Schmuck!
