Michael Wacha dropped the final home game of the year.
Wacha didn’t have his best command. He allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings while striking out four batters.
“Just a couple of innings there where I couldn’t limit the big innings,” Wacha said. “Keep them to one or two in those innings and we got a chance there. Gave them that early lead, big number there … credit to our guys for fighting back in there to make it a game.”
The Royals put up 20 runs on Friday, including ten runs off catcher
Tyler Heineman, who was brought into pitch.
“I mean, tonight was a little ridiculous with the way balls were flying. I’ve never seen a team hit like that off a position player,” said Pasquantino, who was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. “You’re kind of supposed to do that, but I’ve honestly never seen it. Typically, there’s a lot of flyouts. But I think that’s a testament to how the at-bats were going tonight. Guys weren’t trying to get big.”
Seth Lugo will be shut down for the year.
“He’s not going to pitch again,” Quatraro said. “It’s not getting better quickly enough to do anything meaningful for him to come out here and force it. So he’s going to be shut down.”
The Royals have a chance at back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2014-15.
“You fight tooth and nail for every inch in this game, and when you have a chance to be better than .500, that means something,” Quatraro said. “That’s not what we set our goals to be, to just be a .500 or better team, but it certainly means something to me. It means something to the organization.”
Noah Cameron made his last home start of the year.
“Obviously, super proud. It’s been really cool,” Cameron said of pitching in Kansas City. “It’s obviously been a dream to throw here, not just in the big leagues, to throw here in front of the crowd.
“… Mom was crying, of course. So it was cool just to get that standing ovation from the home crowd. It’s awesome. I just really appreciate all the fans and everybody, it’s been really cool. A lot more to come.”
Bobby Witt Jr. is stumping for Noah Cameron in the Rookie of the Year race.
“I don’t know what else he needs to do to get in that consideration,” Witt said of Cameron’s ROY status.
