In Monday’s ACC Action, UNC hammered ECU 99-51, Virginia did American dirty 95-51, Florida State swamped Jacksonville 87-63, Syracuse knocked down Stonehill 77-48 and BC got by Farleigh Dickinson 72-61.
None of these mattered much at all and would have only mattered if any of the ACC teams had lost, a la Notre Dame against Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday night.
That didn’t happen.
UNC looked more like UNC than it has in a while. Yes it was ECU and not Michigan State, but still the Heels looked really solid.
Caleb Wilson had 21 points, 12 boards and 4 blocks, while Henri Veesaar had 16 points, including 4 threes, and 10 rebounds. Seth Trimble had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists while Luka Bogavac had 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
UNC held ECU to 9% on threes and 26% overall. Even though ECU had an awful shooting night, missing 54 shots, it’s surprising that the Pirates got 20 offensive rebounds. Why?
Because UNC has vastly more talent. It’s probably not a huge concern, but it’ll be talked about.
Not much else jumps out as an immediate problem.
Virginia had a solid outing as well. Thijs De Ridder had a nice game, scoring 27 on 11-15/3-4 with 8 rebounds as well.
Johann Grünloh seems like he’s a bit off his feed lately. This is his 4th straight game with 8 points but he’s shown real potential as a shot blocker. In four of his last five games, he’s had 1 and 4 in the other.
Break up the ‘Noles! FSU has won two straight now after losing the previous five.
The Seminoles started with a 27-7 run and never looked back. Martin Somerville led with 23 and Florida State out-rebounded Jacksonville 44-28.
This is still not a great team but they’ve gotten some good work in lately.
Nothing unusual in Syracuse’s win over Stonehill. It’s just a glorified scrimmage, but at least they didn’t screw it up.
Syracuse got 27 points off turnovers and had 12 blocks as well. As Barry noted recently, the Orange have had trouble from the line. Well that was really true here as Syracuse shot just 48% from the line (14-29).
It took BC late into the second half to get any separation from Farleigh Dickinson: with just 3:37 to play, this was a four point game.
The Eagles did pull away though and built a 10 point lead with 2:36 to go. It wasn’t an easy game to win, but the bottom line is the main thing and at 6-6, BC is back to .500.
Luka Toews had 21 points to lead Boston College.
Everyone is off until Saturday when 10-2 Stanford takes on Cal State Northridge.
