Bayern Munich is back in Champions League action
on Tuesday night. After the disappointing 3-1 loss to Arsenal, Bayern has rattled off three wins against German opponents. Sporting CP, the challengers from Portugal’s Primeira Liga, is riding an impressive nine game undefeated streak over the past two months.
Bayern has never lost to a Portuguese club at the Allianz Arena. In fact, Bayern’s last loss to a Portuguese team was in 2015 on the wrong against FC Porto. Bayern has not played Sporting CP since 2009 when Bayern dominated both legs in the Champions League Round of 16, boasting a 12-1 aggregate score.
In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Sporting CP currently sits five points behind first place Porto. In the Champions League, Sporting CP is comfortably sitting in eighth place with 10 points through five matches. Sporting CP’s only Champions League loss this campaign, a 2-1 defeat at Napoli, was also Sporting CP’s last loss across all competitions.
Team News
Here is the predicted lineup, courtesy of BFW:
Vincent Kompany had the luxury of rotating half of the lineup in the 5-0 thrashing of Stuttgart over the weekend. Manuel Neuer, Jonathan Tah, and Serge Gnabry got the entire night off, while Harry Kane, Aleksandar Pavlović, Josip Stanišić, and Lennart Karl only played in the second half.
Luis Díaz will serve the second leg of his two-match suspension. This will force another attacking line of Michael Olise, Karl, and Gnabry that struggled to find its rhythm against Arsenal. Hopefully playing on home turf with a little rest will quickly solve those woes.
From an injury standpoint, Bayern will be without the services of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies.
After the shocking exit of Ruben Amorim last season, Rui Borges has restabilized Sporting CP. He exclusively runs a 4-2-3-1 similar to Bayern’s system. Luis Suárez, the Colombian non-shoulder biting version, is the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals across all competitions. Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand has captained every match this season.
