Bayern Munich’s 6-1 win over Atalanta in the Champions League round of 16 was marred by injuries to multiple players. One of said players was goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who suffered a nasty blow to the head in the dying seconds of the game. Urbig had to be supported by the medical staff as he walked off the pitch, and rushed to the hospital immediately.
While there has not been an exact diagnosis, Bild’s Heiko Niedderer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) reported that Urbig would be sidelined for around 8
to 10 days with his head injury. This would rule him out of the Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen this weekend, and most likely also the second leg against Atalanta next week.
With captain and starting goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also sidelined with a calf injury, Sven Ulreich is set to start in goal for at least the next two games. Ulreich has been Bayern’s third goalkeeper since Urbig’s arrival. His most recent official game for Bayern was a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen in 2024. He did, however, see the pitch in Bayern’s winter break friendly against Red Bull Salzburg, which also ended 5-0. Ulreich kept a clean sheet in both games.
