Anthony Gordon has been offered some advice from former Barcelona midfielder Emmanuel Petit after making the switch from Newcastle to the Camp Nou.
Petit says he’s not yet convinced about the transfer but says that Gordon must show his character on the pitch if he is to prove a success with Hansi Flick’s side.
“When Barcelona signed him for £70m, I was thinking, why? Why that price tag, and why him? Does he have the technical skills and movement to please the Barcelona DNA? I am not sure. The competition
to earn a place in the first eleven will be very difficult,” he told Barca Blaugranes on behalf of Jackpot City Casino.
“My best advice for him, putting aside his quality, is to be strong and show personality on the pitch. This is very important. When you play for Barcelona, especially upfront, you have to show your character. I am not convinced with Gordon.”
Petit also urged Gordon to take a step up and warned that expectations will be high after joining a club where fans have witnessed such brilliant players feature out wide over the years.
“When he plays for Newcastle, I think he can disappear easily into the game. He doesn’t always make a huge difference, and the regularity of his performances is questioned. I want him to act as a proper top footballer on the pitch: take the ball and make a difference,” he added.
“Show your character and your personality. If he doesn’t do that, he is going to have a lot of trouble, not only in the dressing room but with the fans.
“Barcelona fans have lived with Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, and so many great Ballon d’Or winners on the flanks. He has a huge responsibility, so I think there is still room for improvement.”
