Most pro wrestling fans who keep up with the daily news know John Cena vs. Edge was never going to happen during Cena’s WWE retirement tour this year. The most obvious reason for why that’s the case is because
Edge signed with AEW two years ago, where he currently wrestlers under his real name Cope Adam Copeland. It’s very clear there aren’t going to be any crossover matches between WWE and AEW, at least not anytime soon.
However, it was just last month on AEW Dynamite when Copeland wrote himself off TV by saying, “I can’t keep doing this” and “I gotta go…and I don’t know if I’m gonna come back.” This angle was done so Copeland could leave AEW for a while to film the next season of Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Even so, rumors began to spread like crazy that Edge was now in play to return to WWE and wrestle against John Cena in the final match of his career in December. Former WWE star David Otunga even theorized that the current mess between AEW and WWE over Andrade’s non-complete clause could be resolved if AEW allows Copeland to return to WWE for the Cena match.
Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer quickly shot down that idea, noting that WWE already has plans set for Cena’s final match, and they have no interest in bringing Edge in for it.
“It’s like, they already decided what they’re doing for Cena’s retirement, and it ain’t Adam Copeland. They don’t want Adam Copeland. Why would they want Adam Copeland to begin with? Cena might want him, but that one’s not happening, and there’s nothing in that direction.
But I guess people, because of that interview Adam Copeland did about he’s leaving, they started talking about maybe he’s Cena’s last opponent. And I guess some people haven’t told people that he just left to do some acting work, and it’s got nothing to do with WWE or being Cena’s last opponent.”
It’s an obvious conclusion for many folks reading this. But I’ve already had to explain why Cena vs. Edge isn’t happening to more casual fans I know in recent weeks, so it’s a rumor that definitely gained traction and is worth shutting down.
Were you holding out hope for one more Cena vs. Edge match this year, Cagesiders?
