Gianluca Prestianni’s suspected racist remarks against Vinicius Junior in Benfica’s Champions League playoff against Real Madrid shook the footballing world and saw many different reactions to the sad event. Vincent Kompany was asked to give his opinion on the incident in the press conference ahead of Bayern Munich’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt and that he did in an eloquent twelve minute speech. It is transcribed here.
And the footballing world reacted to this speech as well. The speech was
shared around social media while many different news sites and outlets wrote about it. It shook the footballing world again, but this impact was very welcome.
After the match, reporters looked to follow up on the speech by asking Kompany about what reactions he saw, who contacted him (did Mourinho talk to him after Kompany said the Portuguese coach had made a mistake in his handling of the incident?) and does he hope that other famous people in the world will use their position to be positive role models and use their voice like Kompany did?
But Kompany, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, did not have any more to say on the topic: “I think I said everything about it yesterday. It was a very spontaneous, open and honest opinion on the situation. Today is a day for positive football stuff. Everything has been said yesterday. I can’t say anything more about it.”
