NFL coaches are obsessed with perfection. Winning is great, but fixing problems overrides any victory joy.
That’s where first-year Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak this week after a Week 1 27-13 home win over t Miami Dolphins. Kubiak is squarely focused on improving in Week 2 at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
So, fixing some issues on offense is a major focal point for Kubiak this week. The Raiders’ offense played a mostly imrpessive game agaisnt Maimi, but the team did struglgle some in the second
half when 10 of their 27 points.
“I think it starts with me and putting us in better position to be successful,” Kubiak told reporters this week. “We didn’t run the ball very well in second half, weren’t good on third down. Just overall, I thought just lost our steam. That being said, we put ourselves in good position in the first half, and we just got to play four quarters of football. Was really pleased the way our defense played four quarters of
football.”

One of the offensive issues was two interceptions thrown by Las Vegas quarterback Kirk Cousins in the second half. That is a teaching point, the coach said.
“Just two plays that were two avoidable mistakes that I know Kirk wants those plays back. We’ll learn from them. I thought Kirk opened the game playing really good football,” Kubiak said. “Those
two decisions hurt us, and we also put two balls on the ground. That didn’t hurt us because I think Mike
[Washington Jr.] had one and Jack [Bech] had one, so we’re all accountable to that. We can all improve
on that.”
Still, Kubiak was pleased with the team’s effort and is confident they can clean up their Week 1 issues soon.
“Aside from the fourth quarter, I was really pleased with our discipline. We weren’t
penalized,“ Kubiak said. ”I thought offensively, I thought the guys were coming off the ball, doing all the little things that we asked them to do that really, take no talent. I was happy the way our defense was swarming to
the ball. So, discipline and just overall effort.”
