BYU has started 2-0 for the sixth season in a row. After pounding Portland State 69-0, they grinded down Stanford with a 27-3 victory.
Certainly, there are some things to clean up for BYU, especially on the offense. The Stanford game left many fans unsatisfied with the number of missed opportunities and points left on the field.
Through two games, which players have stood out the most? Let’s look at five.
Will Ferrin, K
BYU currently has one of the best kickers in school history currently on the roster.
Ferrin is in the middle of a school record-breaking 22 consectuive field goals made. Against Portland State, he tied the school record with a 56-yard field goal. He is the only kicker in BYU history with at least three 54-yard or longer field goals. Need I say more?
Isaiah Jatta, LT
It’s always a good sign when your left tackle is one of the standout performers. He had big shoes to fill after Caleb Etienne held down the position in 2024. So far, so good on that front. Jatta is currently the eighth-highest graded lineman in all the FBS and the top-graded tackle in the entire country, per Pro Football Focus. He has allowed just two pressures, with zero sacks, in 46 pass blocking snaps.
LJ Martin, RB
Even with not playing the entire second half against Portland State, Martin leads all Big 12 running backs with 241 rushing yards. His 9.3 yards per carry also lead the Big 12 for anyone with at least 20 rushing attempts. He brings a level of physicality BYU needs. He is second in the Big 12 in missed tackles forced. He leads the conference in yards after contact per attempt.
Martin is poised for the best season of his time at BYU.
Faletau Satuala, S
By Pro Football Focus’ grades, Satuala is the third-best defensive back in the Big 12 through two games. BYU picked off Stanford twice in their 27-3 victory and Satuala came down with one of them and returned it 24 yards. In pass coverage, he has allowed a microscopic 2.8 passer rating. He has faced three targets from opposing quarterbacks, resulting in an interception and one completion for -1 yards. His six total tackles also lead all BYU defensive backs.
Carsen Ryan, TE
What a pickup Ryan is turning out to be. After having a limited role with Utah last year, Ryan hit the portal and moved just a few miles south to Provo. Aaron Roderick’s offense is reaping that reward. Only Chase Roberts has more receptions than Ryan’s five. He has tallied 83 yards and got a touchdown against Portland State that should’ve been featured on the defunct ESPN segment “You Got Moss’d.” Not only has he been effective in the passing game, but his effort in run blocking has earned him praise from the coaches. He looks like one of the more well-rounded tight ends BYU has had in several seasons.
