Rumors linking Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane with a move to FC Barcelona continue to make headlines, but former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and France midfielder Claude Makélélé believes there is little chance of the England captain leaving Bavaria anytime soon.
Speaking about the speculation, Makélélé pointed to Bayern Munich’s position as one of the world’s biggest clubs and questioned why the Bundesliga champions would ever consider selling one of their most important players.
“Harry Kane? He’s at
a club where he’s flourishing, and you don’t leave a club like that when you’re happy. Bayern remain one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I don’t see them letting him go. And when I say Kane, I say Olise, too,” Makélélé told ComeOn. “A management would have to be, I won’t say stupid, but ignorant, to let players of that level walk away and strengthen a direct rival you might meet in the Champions League. You see what I mean? You keep your best players. In football anything can happen, but I don’t see a coach like Kompany letting his two key men leave. It would be suicide, practically.”
Makélélé’s comments echo the reality of Bayern Munich’s current situation. Since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has become the centerpiece of Bayern Munich’s attack, consistently producing goals at an elite level while helping the club compete for domestic and European honors. Meanwhile, Michael Olise has quickly established himself as another key figure under Vincent Kompany, making the pair indispensable to Bayern Munich’s ambitions.
The former France international also raises an important point regarding the Champions League. Selling elite talent to another European heavyweight is rarely a strategy embraced by clubs with aspirations of winning the competition themselves. Allowing two cornerstone players to join a potential knockout-stage opponent would weaken Bayern while simultaneously strengthening a direct rival.
As Makélélé notes, “anything can happen” in football, but the circumstances surrounding Kane simply do not point toward a departure. Bayern Munich has little incentive to cash in on one of the world’s best strikers, and with Kompany building his side around players like Kane and Olise, any move to FC Barcelona appears highly unlikely at this stage.
