Since taking over for Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann has reestablished a sense of belief in the German national team, especially with their strong showing at Euro 2024 on home soil. Germany fans across the world all remember that uncalled handball on Marc Cucurella against Spain in Stuttgart in the Euro’s quarterfinals for which a different decision on the afternoon very well could’ve resulted in Germany reaching the final in Berlin, but that’s all history now. With the World Cup on the horizon,
Nagelsmann has another chance to prove to the world that Die Mannschaft is once again a force to be reckoned with, but will the former Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim manager wind up serving his full DFB contract that runs through Euro 2028?
Regardless of what winds up happening with Nagelsmann this summer at the World Cup, the DFB always has to be thinking about who would replace him, whether that be in just a couple month’s time or a few years down the road. Nonetheless, former Germany and Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus recently said that he feels former Liverpool, Dortmund, and Mainz manager Jürgen Klopp would be the perfect fit to succeed Nagelsmann.
Of course, Klopp’s name has been mentioned in the same breath as the national team several times before, but Reus feels it would be a natural succession. “With Julian Nagelsmann, we have an excellent coach in this position. Nevertheless, I believe that Kloppo would be an excellent national coach with his manner and skills. And I’m convinced that one day he will be,” Reus explained in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Germany (via Sky Sport). The winger knows him quite well from all the time they spent together at Dortmund having joined the club shortly after Klopp had bested Bayern in both 2011 and 2012 in the Bundesliga and he now applies is traits in the MLS with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Klopp, who is going to be a pundit for MagentaTV this summer for the World Cup coverage of the national team, has been dismissive when he’s been asked about one day taking the reins for the national team, but’s it’s certainly not inconceivable. His name has even been linked with a return to Liverpool now that the club has decided to part ways with Arne Slot, but all of that is just noise right now.
Klopp rumors aside, Reus, who now lives and plays in the United States, is very much looking forward to the spectacle of the World Cup in North America and Mexico, seeing it as a massive opportunity for the game to continue to grow on that side of the globe and get closer to what it’s like elsewhere in the world. “I hope that people realize what a great opportunity the tournament gives them to take the sport to a new level, that football will succeed in overtaking sports such as basketball, baseball or football in the next few years,” he stressed.
