I was fortunate enough to have been attendance for the most anticipated college football game in Oxford history, if not one of the most anticipated in College Football recent memory. Nowhere on my bingo card was a 17-0 start for the Rebels. I would have been less surprised if that result was flipped.
Not that I did not believe in our team, I just was unsure about our offensive line against their insane defensive front seven. Our
offensive line was INCREDIBLE!
For those unfamiliar, will follow the games (yes I am two behind) with the 4-2-5 report, highlighting the four best plays, two players of the game and five interesting stats. I don’t know how the hell I am going to narrow this down.
4 Plays of the Game
Heisman reel. Simply put. Patrick Mahomes, playground-type stuff. This play did not lead to anything as the offense stalled out in the third quarter. However, this is just one of those plays that make Trinidad Chambliss the best and most exciting player in college football.
This score could go overlooked as the story gets told throughout the year. LSU scored with less than 2 minutes left in the first half and were set to receive the ball to start the second half. Any time on the clock seems to be too much time for Chambliss. Halting any momentum for the Tigers as they head into the locker room and extending the lead back out to 17 was huge.
I have watched this play a hundred times. Stacking the short side of the field and LSU lining up in man made this the easiest decision for Chambliss to keep it and go. Luke Hasz made a huge block coming across the formation and the LSU safety took one step towards the gap and that was enough for Trinidad to outrun him on his way to the endzone for the game winning touchdown.
This play ultimately had no impact on the game, but when the stadium saw the Rebs lining up for two, there was a lot of confusion and silence going on. Yes, it went through my mind that we would score this, go up 7, and Kiffin would score, go for two and win the game. Must’ve been on Pete’s mind too. I am not sure I have seen this before, but man did that whole sequence change the fabric of the final six minutes. Now, there was no way the Rebs could lose on one possession. Now the pressure was on LSU. Pete needed a wheelbarrow to haul them things out of Vaught-Hemingway Saturday night.
2 Players of the Game
Trinidad Chambliss – 365 total yards and 3 touchdowns
The Tiger fan sitting RIGHT behind me kept saying that Trinidad can’t throw the ball down the field, make him run or throw short. Some people just weren’t blessed with a brain or eyeballs I suppose. He had a Heisman game. The interception was a product of him being hit while he threw, not a poor decision. Had he not been hit, it could have been a touchdown. From the insane flip pass, to the game winning touchdown run, Trinidad did what had to be done to win the biggest game.
Will Echoles – 5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack
It was really hard not picking Traylon Ray here, but when your star defensive lineman grades out as the best in the SEC in the biggest game of the week, kind of hard not to select him. He was disruptive from start to finish whether he was embarrassing the inside lineman or lining up on the edge. Now the run game for LSU started to make gains, but as far as pass rush goes, Echoles led the way for the Rebels.
5 Interesting Stats
12 – Ole Miss is now 12-11-1 at home vs LSU all time. Trinidad Chambliss passed Archie Manning to be 12th all time in passing yards at Ole Miss with 4,861. Kewan Lacy is also now 12th all time in rushing yards at Ole Miss with 1,758. His 12 game touchdown streak is the longest in school history.
3- Ole Miss now has the 3rd longest home winning streaking in college football with 14 straight. With his sixteenth straight game with a touchdown pass, Trinidad Chambliss has tied Eli Manning for the 3rd longest streak in school history.
7 – Traylon Ray (who wears #7) hauled in a career high 7 catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Trinidad Chambliss has now thrown and ran for a touchdown in the same game, 7 times. There were 7 different players to record multiple receptions in the contest.
289 – The LSU had only surrendered a total of 284 yards of offense over the first two games combined. An insane stat for sure. However, the Ole Miss offense put up 289 yards of offense in just the first half on Saturday night.
8/2 – This is now the 8th time that Ole Miss has beaten LSU in two straight seasons. The last time was the 2008-09 stretch with ranked Houston Nutt teams. The win streak against LSU has only been longer than two, twice. 1938-1940 was a three game streak and the longest was six seasons between 1952-57.
