Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday, which marks the final game of the NFL’s 2025 season.
Today’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New Englands Patriots is the 60th Super Bowl to be played, and it is also the 60th consecutive year that the Cleveland Browns have opted out of participating in the game.
That does not mean the trophy case is empty at team headquarters in Berea, of course, because despite what fans of teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers would have everyone believe, the NFL did exist and
play crown league champions prior to the Super Bowl era.
In fact, the very first NFL champion was the Akron Pros in 1920!
The Browns have eight championship seasons to the name – four in the All-American Football Conference and four in the NFL – which puts them in a tie with the New York Giants for the third-most among the 32 teams currently in the league. For those wondering, the Green Bay Packers are first with 13 championships, while the Chicago Bears are No. 2 with nine titles.
And for those keeping score at home, if the Patriots win today it would be their seventh title, moving them into sole position of fourth place. As for the Seahawks, a win would be the franchise’s second title, moving them into a tie with the Miami Dolphins, the Cardinals (whose last championship game in 1947 while they were still in Chicago), Canton Bulldogs, Baltimore Ravnes, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Someday, perhaps, the Browns will get their act together and be an active participant in Super Bowl Sunday. Until then, let’s kick off the day with the latest edition of the Sunday Dawg Chow.
