Conference play is finally here for Aggie Baseball, and the gauntlet begins with a road trip to neighboring state Oklahoma to tangle with the Sooners.
But first, a brief recap of Tuesday’s 14-1 midweek victory over Stephen F. Austin. A 4-1 ballgame entered the sixth and exited as 14-1 and three outs away from a run-rule win. Texas A&M (15-1) put up a 10-spot in the sixth, capped with homers from Blake Binderup (his second of the game) and Bear Harrison. On the mound, Gavin Lyons tossed 4.2 innings
and allowed the only Lumberjack run (a fourth-inning solo shot). It was a great way to remain unbeaten in Bryan-College Station, grab a sixth consecutive win, and head into the first SEC weekend series.
The No. 22 Aggies will also face their second top-10 opponent this season and first in a three-game set. Oklahoma, ranked ninth in this week’s D1 Baseball Top 25, enters the conference slate with a 15-2 record. Early season highlights for the Sooners include sweeping the opening weekend in Arlington, Texas, with wins over Texas Tech, rival Oklahoma State, and top-10 TCU. The Sooners started the season on a seven-game win streak before Arizona State run-ruled them 15-3 in Norman, Okla., on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Like the Aggies, Oklahoma also enters conference play on a 5+ game winning streak, having defeated Dallas Baptist, Santa Clara (3x), and UT Arlington consecutively at home. The Sooners’ other defeat in 2026 was to Gonzaga in the series finale on Mar. 1 by a 7-1 score.
The two squads share one current common opponent, Arizona State. Oklahoma split their two-game midweek series with the Sun Devils, while the Aggies took care of business in their single game in Arlington, Texas, two weeks ago.
Two junior college transfers stand out for Oklahoma, with Mascoutah, Ill., native Brendan Brock leading the team in homers (4) and RBI (21). French-Canadian Deiten Lachance holds a team-high .404 batting average and has collected 20 RBI to help the Sooners start strong this season.
Ninth-ranked Oklahoma will try to cool off A&M’s dominant offense, a team that has averaged 10 runs a game and has the eighth-highest team batting average (.344) in Division I. However, all three games may end up low-scoring with both pitching staffs ranking in the top 15 in team ERA. A&M is 11th with their 2.95 ERA, while Oklahoma has a 3.09 ERA, good for 14th in Division I.
Five Aggie hitters (Caden Sorrell, Terrence Kiel II, Nico Partida, Jake Duer, and Gavin Grahovac) have 20 or more hits in 2026, continuing to pace the early explosive offense. A new home run song, Turbulence by Laidback Luke, Lil Jon, and Steve Aoki, debuted for the Maroon and White earlier this week, replacing the Rattlin’ Bog. It may not be heard over the PA system in Norman, but the Aggies will need to keep the bumpy ride going for opposing hitters. If we have learned anything so far about the 2026 Aggie Baseball team, it’s that home run hitting will carry the offense. That will be a tall task to consistently maintain against SEC pitching, but with 32 longballs already, they are on pace to surpass last season’s total (95).
Texas A&M and Oklahoma are no strangers, having been former Big 12 foes. This is the first meeting between squads as SEC members and the first since two meetings at the 2022 College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where the Sooners won both battles. The last time both schools saw each other in a regular season series was April 5-7, 2012, in Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. The Aggies swept the Sooners 14 years ago, highlighted by a 12-inning, 4-3 walk-off win in game one. Dating back to 1912, the Aggies are 37-38 all-time against the border state rivals.
Winning on the road in the SEC is never easy, but taking at least one game is a must. Starting the conference slate strong would be a huge measuring stick, as the Aggies have won their opening SEC series once over the last five seasons (2022, took two of three on the road at #8 LSU).
