It was a coming out party for Brayden Burries on Saturday night in Birmingham, but according to those that decide the Big 12 Conference’s weekly awards it wasn’t the best performance of the past seven days.
Burries was named to the league’s Starting Five following his career-high 28-point effort against Alabama in Arizona’s 96-75 win, keeping the Wildcats unbeaten and No. 1 in the country.
Kansas’ Melvin Council Jr., however, was named Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week after going for 36 points
(with nine 3-pointers) in an overtime win at North Carolina State.
Burries, who was 11 of 18 from the field and 5 of 10 from 3 vs. Alabama, has averaged 19.8 points over his last four games following a rough start to his college career. For the season he’s averaging 13.1 per game.
This is the third week Arizona has had a player the Big 12’s Starting Five this season. Koa Peat has been Newcomer of the Week twice and was also Player of the Week after his stellar debut against defending NCAA champion Florida in the season opener
Arizona (9-0) has two games on tap this week, hosting Abilene Christian on Tuesday night before taking on San Diego State on Saturday night in Phoenix.
