Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 6, Gwinnett Stripers (ATL) 4
This wasn’t the greatest day of pitching for the Norfolk Tides but the offense carried them. The Tides had eight hits in the game, including a pair of RBI doubles by catcher Silas Ardoin. Ardoin currently has a .309 average and .856 OPS in 23 games at Triple-A. Other contributions at the plate from Liván Soto, who hit a two-run double, and TT Bowens, who walked with the bases loaded in the ninth. The Tides scored a sixth run on a wild pitch.
As for the pitching, it’s cool that Trey Gibson has pitched
at three levels in the Orioles org this season, but so far his time at Triple-A hasn’t been good. In four starts, he’s 1-2 with a 8.59 ERA, and on Sunday he allowed four runs in three innings. Better were the four relievers who followed him: Anthony Nunez, Elvin Rodriguez, Chayce McDermott and Yaramil Hiraldo, who threw a combined six scoreless innings.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 8, Reading Fightin Phils 3
Technically this counts as a downer of a start for Michael Forret, who allowed three runs in 3.2 innings. But the right-hander has been so great this year that it’s hard to be super mad about his first bad start so far.
Taking over from Forret in relief were Alex Pham, Peter van Loon, Tyson Neighbors, and Gerald Ogando, who threw a combined 5 ⅓ scoreless.
Besides, there was tons of offense for Chesapeake on Sunday. Reed Trimble homered on a three-hit day. Creed Willems singled and drove in a run. Brandon Butterworth doubled twice, and so did Carter Young. Creed Willems hit an RBI single, and Adam Retzbach hit an RBI double.
High-A: Jersey Shore BlueClaws (PHI) 6, Aberdeen IronBirds 0
The IronBirds looked a little like the big-league team on Sunday, amirite? Aberdeen hitters divvied up six hits apiece, only one for extra bases (a Maikol Hernández double), while getting shut out. The other authors were Griff O’Ferrall, Thomas Sosa, Elis Cuevas, Ryan Stafford, and a pinch-hitting Nate George.
Despite the box score, starter Chase Allsup had a fine outing, allowing one run in 3.2 innings. Ben Vespi threw a scoreless 1.1 innings, but Jack Crowder got torched, allowing five runs in the sixth and seventh. Despite the IronBirds making four errors in the field, all of them were earned. Jacob Cravey threw 1.1 scoreless to close the game, and struck out four.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 1, Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 0
Yay, Delmarva pitched a shutout! This was a combined effort behind five pitchers. Keeler Morfe started it off with 2.2 innings in which he allowed just one hit and two walks. Deivy Cruz retired one hitter and got the win, due to the quirks of baseball scoring. Denton Biller, this year’s sixteenth-round pick, covered 3.2 innings in his second appearance at Low-A. Dylan Heid, on a rehab assignment, threw 1.1. Andy Fabian got the save.
There wasn’t a lot of offense, but on Sunday there didn’t have to be. A fourth-inning RBI single by Luis Almeyda plated the only run of the game. Despite that, Cobb Hightower had three singles and RJ Austin doubled and singled. Ike Irish, Braylin Tavera and Almeyda all singled.
