The Carolina Panthers are coming off their first win of the season, over the division rival Falcons. Their opponent this week is also coming off a win over an NFC South division rival, as the Browns defeated the Buccaneers 23-19. This put both teams’ 2026 seasons back on track at 1-1, and the Panthers will now visit the Browns in Cleveland on Sunday. The Panthers are riding high off a strong offensive start to the season for QB Bryce Young, and that’s my first storyline to keep track of.
Offense: Continue attacking down the field
The most
surprising storyline coming out of two weeks of the NFL season across the league is the Panthers’ crazy effectiveness with the deep ball. Jalen Coker is rated the highest at deep ball effectiveness at WR by Pro Football Focus so far, and Tetairoa McMillan has also been an effective down field weapon for the team. Combine that with an insane air yard throw from Bryce to Xavier Legette this past Sunday, and its clear this Panthers team is pushing to be aggressive in the passing game. The Browns defense as a whole hasn’t been the best so far, but on paper they quietly have a very solid defense. They have a very solid secondary and a front seven that could cause problems for the Panthers rushing attack. The Panthers need to see the continued momentum from Bryce Young attacking down the field with touch and confidence, as he’s put together some of his best consecutive deep passing games in his career. I would expect offensive coordinator Brad Idzik to continue to be aggressive on that front.
Defense: Don’t sleep on Quinshon Judkins
The Browns faced two very good rushing defenses against the Jaguars and Buccaneers in consecutive weeks, and those teams held down the Browns rushing attack for the most part. Judkins only averaged 2.8 yards per carry in week 1 and 1.8 yards per carry in week 2, both pretty miserable performances for the former 2nd round pick who likely would have been picked in the 1st had he not had some off field issues. This could be a bounce back game for Judkins if the Browns focus on the rushing attack to try and stabilize the offense for QB Deshaun Watson, who himself had a decent bounce back performance last week against the Browns.
X Factor: Cleveland Browns young receiving core
The Browns spent high picks on WRs KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston in 2026, and drafted promising young TE Harold Fannin in 2025. Any time you have a receiving group that unproven, teams tend to view it as a weakness. However, Denzel Boston has caught 7 receptions for 154 yards and 2 TDs this season, Fannin has 7 catches for 75 yards, and Concepcion has 10 catches for 71 yards in two games. This is with Deshaun Watson at QB who hasn’t really played football for several years now. I wouldn’t underestimate these guys, even if the Panthers secondary matches up extremely well against them in theory. The Bears lit up this defense in the passing game week 1, admittedly with an all-world performance from their QB Caleb Williams. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of these guys eat well on Sunday and the game is much closer than many fans expect.
