Two days before the season opener, the Buffalo Bills announced that they were placing kicker Tyler Bass on Injured Reserve. The Bills 2020 draft pick has been dealing with what the team initially called “pelvic soreness” since the beginning of August.
Bass didn’t kick in the first two of Buffalo’s preseason games and the Bills brought Caden Davis to camp. Davis covered the kicking duties until August 20, when Buffalo released him – presumably because they thought Bass was ready to go. Game three of the preseason saw
Bass back on the field with the special team’s unit where he converted three out of four field goal attempts.
As the Bills broke camp and started official in-season practices, Bass’s injury issues were still relevant. He was limited in practice on Wednesday with what was now more specifically being listed as a hip and groin injury. He was downgraded to a non-participant on Thursday, prompting the Bills to sign 40-year-old Matt Prater to the practice squad.
At his regular Friday morning, pre-practice press conference, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was asked about Bass’s status and responded that he was not ruling the kicker out for Sunday night’s season opener against the Baltimore Ravens just yet. However, another day of non-practice changed things, and Friday afternoon Buffalo announced that Bass would spend at least the next four weeks on Injured Reserve.
