Michigan Wolverines special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs continues to make waves in the transfer portal, bringing in his third signee — Pitt kicker Trey Butkowski. He signed with Michigan on Thursday morning.
Butkowski comes to Ann Arbor after an extremely successful freshman campaign with the Panthers. He went 20-of-23 on field goal attempts (career-long of 47
yards) and 43-of-44 on his extra point tries in 2025. He earned second-team All-ACC honors and was named to the Pro Football Focus All-Freshman Team.
The Orlando, Florida native finished top-20 in field goal percentage and was the nation’s fifth-highest scorer with an average of 9.4 points per game, even after missing two games due to illness.
Butkowski joins fellow Pitt Panther, long snapper Nico Crawford, and UNLV punter Cam Brown as Michigan’s three portal commitments of the winter so far.
In just a matter of days, Michigan has greatly improved one of its biggest areas of weakness in 2025. With kicker Dominic Zvada out of college eligibility, the Wolverines found their kicker of the future. Coombs has completely reshaped the special teams unit in short order.
