When Liverpool started off the 2025-26 season by earning results that to most seemed somewhat better than the performances perhaps deserved, the question at the time was whether they could improve on the performance side of things before their luck ran out.
A dire run through October and November said no, with the pre-season title favourites plummeting into mid-table when performances didn’t improve and the wins turned into draws and defeats. December saw a slight uptick on both fronts, but talk of
improvement seems tenuous.
Liverpool have played better at times, and they’re back to mostly winning again, but the last two games in particular—a pair of 2-1 victories over Wolves and Tottenham—could easily have ended in dropped points and suggests their problems haven’t all been solved.
“I think we’ve had some really good results recently but I think the performances can definitely still get better,” right back Conor Bradley said of Liverpool’s December improvements “That’s something we’ve got to strive to do and hopefully we can do that in the upcoming games.
“We’ve got another tough game coming up now with Leeds. We’ve just got to keep trying to build this momentum and keep it going. Leeds are a really good team—we found that out a few weeks ago when we went to Elland Road—but we’re really looking forward to it.”
Liverpool played their first game of the year against Leeds just back on the 6th of December, an away date that resulted in a 3-3 draw. At Anfield, and with Liverpool’s form and results seemingly on the up, expectations will be for nothing less than three points to keep things going.
A stumble here after two subpar performances that nonetheless ended in victory, and many will be thinking back to the start of the year and rather than talk of Liverpool maybe getting their season back on track the fear will be that the wheels are falling right back off again.
Win, though—and not just win but perform well while doing so—and there will perhaps be room for a better 2026 for Liverpool Football Club and this highly talented group that, despite their struggles, seem set to head into the new year in the top four and with plenty still to play for.
