Heading into the matchup with South Carolina, one of Kentucky’s best receivers was listed as doubtful and ultimately did not play. DJ Miller was the second-leading receiver in the wide receiver room heading into the game, so someone had to step up for the Wildcats in Columbia.
Enter Nic Anderson
Big Blue Nation had been waiting for Anderson to show the version of himself we hoped for, and he showed up at the perfect time. Coming into the matchup against the Gamecocks, Anderson had four catches for 40
yards through four games.
The 6-foot-4 veteran receiver said that’s just not who he is. On Saturday, he went into Williams-Brice Stadium and had a day with five catches for 80 yards and his first touchdown as a Wildcat.
Anderson made his presence felt in many ways. Whether on short plays or as a downfield target, he was a weapon for Kenny Minchey all night.
After the game, head coach Will Stein was effusive in his praise of Anderson, whose career hasn’t been what he’d hoped for after injuries affected much of his last two seasons before arriving in Lexington.
“I’m so proud of that guy. He’s battled a lot in his career. He’s had some dings and been injured, and you know he was an elite talent coming out of high school. Had an unbelievable freshman year at Oklahoma. Bounced around LSU, and then we got him,” Stein said Saturday following the game.
“More importantly about Nic, phenomenal person. Shows up to work every single day with a mindset to get better, selfless, and it paid off. He made some big-time catches. He’s always big in the block game.
“For him to catch that post from Kenny was a giant play and a momentum swing in the game for us. The football gods work in mysterious ways, and tonight they rewarded guys that just really work hard.“
Anderson made sure to return the love to Stein and let the world know that Kentucky Football is ready to compete with the best.
“Kentucky Football is here to stay. We have a great leader in Will Stein, and we’re ready to take on anybody that lines up against us,” Anderson said during postgame interviews.
This performance was special for a few reasons: It led to the comeback win, Anderson passed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in his career, and he scored his first touchdown since September 27 of 2025.
In a game where Minchey threw for 272 yards, Anderson had his welcome-to-Kentucky moment in a huge opportunity. Perfect timing, with his two former schools next on deck: LSU and Oklahoma.
Anderson spent the last two seasons at LSU, so new head coach Lane Kiffin is very familiar with what Anderson can bring to the table.
“He had a great freshman year at Oklahoma,” Kiffin said Monday during his weekly press conference. “I know he battled through some injuries, and I think he was banged up here last year. But, really long, can really run, and really is a problem to cover. So, a really good player and obviously familiar with Joe (Sloan).”
Last season with the Tigers, Anderson caught just 12 passes for 102 yards and two scores. He’s already at nine grabs for 120 yards and a score this year, and he’s staying healthy for the first time in a long time.
After a breakout redshirt freshman year at Oklahoma in 2023, a serious quad injury limited Anderson to just one game in 2024 before entering the portal and landing at LSU.
Anderson then suffered injuries in a summer car crash last year before returning for the start of the season, only to have things go terribly wrong after LSU plummeted before then-head coach Brian Kelly, along with offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, were fired on October 26. Anderson later suffered a season-ending knee injury on November 8, though it thankfully did not require surgery.
That led to Sloan and Anderson both heading to Lexington this offseason, and it’s paying off big time for the 4-1 Wildcats. If Anderson can keep producing like he did in Columbia, this passing offense could be poised for another leap now that DJ Miller is healthy and set to return.
After wide receiver was a major question mark entering the season, Anderson may very well be putting those concerns to bed as Kentucky hits the midpoint of what’s been a promising season so far.
