We’ve got the results of our SB Nation Reacts poll for this week, and since we said we’d get them to you before kickoff on Sunday. . .well, it looks like we’d better get them to you now. So, let’s get to it without any further ado.
We’ll start the way we always start, with our question about whether or not our readers feel that our Minnesota Vikings are moving in the right direction. After a season-high following an ugly win in Week 2, a second consecutive ugly win had our fans feeling quite the opposite
way after the Week 3 win over Tampa Bay.
After seeing the confidence number leap to 75% going into Week 3, it’s now plummeted to just 41% of fans believing the purple are heading in the right direction going into Week 4. Following yet another abysmal showing from the offense, it isn’t terribly difficult to understand why. Yes, it’s fun to watch Brian Flores’ defense continue to put the other team’s offense in a blender every week, but Minnesota’s offense seems to be in a constant state of disarray. Even when they put up 39 points in Week 1, they did so with the benefit of a lot of short fields and miscues from Green Bay rather than a big offensive performance, so things haven’t exactly been encouraging on that side of the ball.
That leads us into our second question for the week, which was what our readers felt was the biggest problem with the Vikings’ offense so far through the first three weeks of the season. While there were quite a few reasons, the biggest one seems to be the most obvious one.
Of those who responded to our poll, 43% felt that the biggest problem offensively thus far has been the play at quarterback, which has been split between Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz through the first three games of the season. Another 27% cited Kevin O’Connell’s system, while another 19% felt the primary issue is the playcalling. There are 7% of our respondents who feel that the reason is something that was not listed among the choices in our poll, while 4% believe the running game is the main culprit.
I believe I saw some folks in the comment section of the post for this week mention the offensive line, but I’m not sure that’s the issue, to be honest. It seems like the quarterbacks have had time when they’ve needed it, but they either haven’t found people open or haven’t pulled the trigger when they’ve needed to. While the quarterback play has been mostly atrocious, this offensive system has never really had anything that resembles any kind of short, quick passing game, and it seems like the lack of it continues to hurt this offense as much as anything else. The Vikings have enough guys who can make plays in space with the ball in their hands, but they’re not giving them the opportunity to do so. That’s not on them, or even on the quarterbacks, really. It’s a product of this system as much as anything else, in my opinion.
Those are our SB Nation Reacts results for this week, folks. As always, we thank everyone who took the time to participate in our poll for this week, and we’ll have another one for you early next week as well, so keep your eyes open for it.
