Big news out of Duke Basketball today as Jayson Tatum joined the staff!
While he’s rehabbing from his Achilles surgery, Tatum will be the Chief Basketball Officer. It’s a new position, essentially a volunteer position, and Tatum will add his insights from his outstanding NBA career.
Scheyer says this: “We are honored to welcome Jayson Tatum as our Chief Basketball Officer. This program has always been about pushing the game forward. Jayson has been incredibly loyal to Duke since the day he committed,
and this evolution represents the next step in how we connect The Brotherhood to the future of our players. Jayson is the ultimate professional. His ability to inspire, motivate, and guide our student-athletes is unmatched, and I could not be more excited to see the impact he will have on our team and our culture.”
For his part, Tatum added “I am ecstatic about the opportunity to be Duke’s first Chief Basketball Officer. This program means so much to me, and I had an unbelievable time here. I already watch every game, come back whenever I can, and connect with Coach Scheyer often. To have the chance to formalize my relationship with the program and broaden my ability to impact the players and culture means the world to me. As former players, we all share the responsibility of supporting the next generation of Duke Basketball.”
Duke’s release says Tatum will share his insights, serve as a mentor, join periodic video sessions and more. That suggests a lot of his contributions will be from Boston, which makes sense, but if he happens to be in town when recruits visit, that would be helpful too.
It really underscores how creatively Scheyer is thinking about his program. Having an active connection to an All-Star and a guy who has a ring is really smart and underscores just how deeply Duke is tied to the NBA. It’s not just the Brotherhood of active players. It’s multiple GMs, scouts and people in ownership positions.
No one else is in a position like Duke is.
