Zack Wheeler last night joined an exclusive club by vaulting past the 2,000 career strikeout number. He joins a list of names that includes fellow Phillies Aaron Nola, Roy Halladay, Jaime Moyer, Robin Roberts, Cole Hamels and Curt Schilling. It’s not a nothing stat that he has made it as it puts him in the company of the game’s greats and longest tenured starters.
It’s quite the accomplishment.
It made me think of today’s question: is Wheeler already among the franchise’s top three right handed starters
in their long and storied history? The top two are probably Roberts and Grover Cleveland Alexander with an argument that Schilling is ahead of Wheeler, maybe Nola if longevity is something that still holds a lot of meaning to you. For me, my top five is (remember: right handed only):
- Robin Roberts
- Grover Cleveland Alexander
- Zack Wheeler
- Curt Schilling
- Aaron Nola
