Jérôme Boateng was an integral figure for Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning side as he formed a staunch center-back tandem with Mats Hummels. Calm and compost, the defensive duo might have bent a little, but never broke.
Jérôme Boateng’s role in 2014
Boateng was one of the pillars of Germany’s World Cup-winning team. Alongside Mats Hummels, he formed the backbone of a defense that conceded only four goals throughout the tournament. His speed and positional awareness were particularly important in the knockout rounds, and he played
every minute against Brazil and in the final against Argentina. Boateng entered the tournament as one of Germany’s most established players and left Brazil as a world champion and one of the best defenders in world football.
What is Jérôme Boateng doing now?
Boateng retired from professional football in 2025 after a final stint with Austrian club LASK and has begun working toward a coaching career.
His post-playing years have also been overshadowed by legal issues involving allegations from a former partner. Following several court proceedings in Germany, Boateng was found guilty in 2024 of intentional bodily harm and received a financial penalty. The case generated significant controversy in Germany, particularly when discussions emerged about a possible return to Bayern Munich in a non-playing role. Supporters’ groups publicly opposed such a move because of the conviction.
