Fermín López, one of FC Barcelona’s brightest young talents, has confirmed that Real Madrid showed interest in signing him before his professional breakthrough, but he insists his heart was always set
on Barcelona. Speaking ahead of El Clásico, the 22-year-old midfielder revealed that despite Madrid’s approach, he would have chosen Barça regardless.
“It is true that there was that interest,” López said. “But my father told me very little. If he had asked me my opinion, I would have chosen Barça anyway, because it was my big dream.” The El Campillo-born midfielder added that achieving this dream still feels surreal. “I am very happy to have made it come true, and I hope I can stay here for many years.”
López’s rise reflects both his talent and dedication. Despite Real Madrid’s attention, he remained loyal to Barcelona, rapidly progressing through the ranks and becoming a key figure under Hansi Flick. Fans and coaches have celebrated his performances, which include a recent UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Olympiacos.
Ahead of El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu, López exuded confidence in his team’s readiness. “Our confidence level from zero to ten? Ten. We are Barça, and we have a great team. Everyone in the locker room is desperately eager to win the Clásico,” he said. He emphasized the importance of the match for both players and supporters. “There is still a lot of La Liga to play for, but we know it is a very important game. We will give everything to win and bring joy to the Barça fans.”
López also praised his midfield partner Pedri, describing him as “an incredible footballer who will mark an era in the club and in the world of football.” He highlighted their strong partnership as a cornerstone of Barcelona’s midfield this season.
Beyond the pitch, López shared insights into his pre-match routine. “Yes, there is something special I do: pray. My grandmother always tells me I should, and that is why I do it,” he revealed, showing the personal side behind his professional focus.
