The Mets will designate center fielder Jose Siri for assignment, according to a report from Will Sammon of The Athletic. There’s no news yet about a corresponding move, but that will presumably change
before first pitch of the Mets’ game in Chicago tonight.
Siri came to the Mets in a trade less than a year ago, as David Stearns got him from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for relief pitcher Eric Orze shortly after the Mets’ 2024 playoff run came to an end. Siri has spent most of the 2025 season on the injured list, but when he has played, he’s struggled mightily at the plate. In just 36 plate appearances, he’s hit .063/.167/.125 with a -11 wRC+.
With Tyrone Taylor having recently been activated from the injured list and Cedric Mullins still on the Mets’ active roster, the team will presumably give the vast majority of the remaining playing time in center field to those two players. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Mets start with a clean slate in center field heading into the 2026 season—regardless of how well or poorly the team’s next five games and potential playoff run go.
