The Commanders 2026 schedule has been released. The team made it officially official on Thursday evening, announced the requisite social media video that has become central to this NFL tentpole event.
Leaks had the schedule mapped out well beforehand, allowing us to digest Washington’s schedule without much rush.
It features four primetime games. A matchup with Indianapolis in London and just two other road trips outside the Eastern and Central Time Zones. Rivalry games with the Eagles and Cowboys,
respectively, start the season. A decently-placed Week 7 bye sits near the halfway point.
Overall, the schedule seems fair in terms of rest and travel. There are, however, some issues with the opponent structure the Commanders must overcome.
The league sure packed a brutal run of opposition into a relatively small stretch and top-loaded the team’s divisional games, making it hard to catch up in the NFC East should they start slow and fall behind.
Here’s the full, official Commanders schedule (with a graphic designed by the Commanders and posted on the team site):
We’ll have plenty more to say about it in the coming days (and, okay, hours), but here’s an instant analysis of the Commanders schedule.
Top-heavy NFC East schedule
The Commanders open the 2026 season with consecutive road games against the Eagles and Cowboys. So, in other words, they’ll need to start hot. Staying that way would benefit their NFC East standing, with games against the Giants in Week 5 and Eagles in Week 8.
The divisional front-loading doesn’t stop there. The Commanders play five of their six NFC East contests by Week 10 – that one’s against the Giants, with only a Week 18 home contest against the Cowboys remaining.
Again, a hot start would help. There’ll be some challenges in doing so, considering Washington has two new coordinators and tons of new defensive players who must learn to work well together. Finding lockstep quickly seems essential given the early run of NFC East contests.
Brutal midseason stretch
The Commanders travel across the country to play San Francisco in Week 6. Then they’ve got a bye, with consecutive matchups with the Eagles and Rams after that. That’s three serious NFC contenders in a span of four weeks. Each one made the playoffs, with the Rams earning a spot in the conference title game.
If we want to take it a bit further, to include the Super Bowl champion Seahawks in Week 3 or the Eagles in Week 1, they play five games against 2025 NFC playoff teams in the first nine weeks. And one week’s a bye! Brutal. That’s a lot, especially considering…
An easier back-half of the schedule
There are just two 2025 playoff teams from Week 10 on, with the Houston Texans slotted for Week 14 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17. A second-half run is possible, especially if chemistry between players and coaches is built through the trial-by-fire of the season’s first half. Visiting Arizona in Week 12 is the only long-distance trip remaining, so the Commanders could get hot and make a late surge.
Well-placed bye
Washington had a Week 12 bye in 2025, it didn’t help stop a prolonged losing strek. They had an even later one in Week 14 during the 2024 campaign, and despite them being and staying hot, there’s an agrument that bye’s too late.
Taking one in Week 7 is a good spot. Head coach Dan Quinn will surely say it’s ideal, and players often follow suit. This one’s close, certainly nothing to complain about. That it sits between primetime showdowns with the San Francisco 49ers and the Eagles rematch could help them recover from one tough matchup and game-plan for another one. While bye week placement shouldn’t rank high in a fan’s list of concerns, Week 7 isn’t a bad place to have one.
